PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKER

National Institute’s Personal Support Worker program is 22 weeks in length with extensive theoretical and practical knowledge that will train you to provide significance and meaning to the lives of your clients as they deal with the effects of aging, illness or injury. This is an opportunity to care. You will be trained to assist your clients with tasks of daily living that include mobility, medication, personal hygiene, cognitive impairment and mental health.
Personal Support Workers must develop a broad range of abilities beyond dexterity skills. They must provide not only for the comfort, safety and well–being of their clients, but also demonstrate sensitivity and respect for those in their care. The attitude, abilities and approach of the worker are critical to the well-being and health of the people they support.
Our program is designed to provide you with the competency-based knowledge and hands-on experience with real clients to become a qualified Personal Support Worker.

As a qualified Personal Support Worker, you will assist your clients with the tasks of daily living. You will provide care and companionship for individuals and families during periods of incapacitation, convalescence or family disruption. You may administer bedside and personal care to clients such as aid in ambulation, bathing, personal hygiene, and dressing and undressing, plan and prepare meals and special diets, and feed or assist in feeding clients, perform routine health – related duties such as changing non–sterile dressings, assisting in the administration of medications and collecting specimens under the general direction of home care agency supervisor or nurse as well as perform routine housekeeping duties such as laundry, washing dishes and making beds.
Care services are provided in homes and apartments in the community, in long–term facilities, nursing homes, retirement homes, congregate housing settings and day programs.
